BMW eRR Electric Super Bike

The BMW Mottorrad Group announced the "experimental vehicle eRR" electric super sport motorcycle.

Press Release:-

Munich. BMW Motorrad has a long tradition in pointing out new ways and thoughts for the topic "mobility on two wheels“. For that, again and again many studies were presented in the past giving views to the future. The experimental vehicle eRR, created as a project with the Technical University of Munich, embodies an idea of an electric powered supersport motorcycle made by BMW Motorrad.
Already a couple of years ago, BMW i showed the BMW Group’s visionary and sustainable approach with the vehicles BMW i3 and i8 and their revolutionary design principles (aluminum chassis and passenger cabin made from carbon fibre) and BMW Motorrad’s C evolution proved, that zero emission, riding fun and practicability do not exclude themselves.
With presenting the experimental vehicle eRR BMW Motorrad goes one step forward and shows the possibilities of an all-electric drive in a supersport motorcycle. Regarding design and chassis technology the eRR leans on the supersport motorcycle S 1000 RR, however using an all-electric drive.
Stephan Schaller, Head of BMW Motorrad, emphasizes: „Since their market launch, the RR is giving the creeps to motorsport athletes. If acceleration, handling or topspeed – the RR is setting standards. However, if acceleration on the first metres, up to 50, 60 kph, is the point, the RR’s 199 bhp have to admit defeat by another BMW product: the C evolution with its electric drive.
We asked ourselves: What happens when combining a sport motorcycle and an electric drive? The experimental vehicle eRR brings the topic zero emission and electric drive on a new, more fascinating level.”
BMW Motorrad will announce technical details of the eRR at a later date.

SMART CARS TECH

1. V2V Communication

Vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication technology for light vehicles. This technology would allow to "talk" to each other and ultimately avoid many crashes altogether by exchanging basic safety data, such as speed and position, ten times per second, to improve safety.

It uses "ad hoc network", where every car is free to associate with any other car available in the network and share equal status. V2V which is also known as VANET (Vehicle ad hoc network), is a variation of MANET (mobile ad hoc network). Many automobile manufacturers including BMW, Audi, Honda, General Motors, Volvo and Daimler are working and developing this technology to improve safety, overcome blind spots and avoid accidents.

2. Pre-collision Technology

Top car-makers such as Ford and Hyundai have developed a pre-collision assist and pedestrian detection technology. Besides helping the driver detect blind spots, this technology also alerts the driver when he/she is not paying attention on road and if the driver falls asleep and does not respond to the warning, then the system applies the brakes on its own. Its collision mitigation braking system delivers an audio and visual warning when there is a risk of head-on collision.

The driver assist system has two types of sensors:-
  1. Millimetre-wave radar located inside the front grille.
  2. Monocular camera mounted on the upper, inside part of wind-shield.

If the driver fails to react, the car will automatically begin breaking itself to prevent or reduce the severity of crash. This technology will debut in 2015 with Ford Mondeo in Europe. Hyundai would introduce it in the new Genesis sedan.

3. Smart Cars

  • Google launched its "Android Auto", a telematics software that can be connected to car dash board for infotainment. It also enables the driver to access GPS, maps, streaming music, weather and a host of other applications. A slew of car-makers including Abarth, Acura, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Bentley, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Infiniti, Jeep, Kia, Maserati and Volvo will offer Android Auto in their cars.

  • Earlier, at the Geneva Motor Show in March, Apple announced its "CarPlay" software, which allows device running on the iOS operating system to function with built-in display units of automobile dashboards. Carmakers like BMW, Daimler, JLR, Honda and Hyundai have installed it in their cars. Infotainment manufacturers like Pioneer & Alpine too have shown interest in Carplay from Apple.

BMW's Electric truck

The BMW Group will be the first automobile manufacturer in Europe to use a 40 ton electric truck for material transport on public roads. It was launched on 7th July at the BMW Group Plant in Munich by Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs, IIse Aigner.

"With our electric truck, we are sending another strong signal for sustainable urban mobility," said Hermann Bohrer, head of the BMW Group Plant in Munich, in a press release. "We are proud to be the first automotive manufacturer in Europe to use an electric truck of this size to transport materials on public roads."

The electric truck by the BMW Group and the SCHERM group will be exclusively charged with electricity from renewable sources. The combination of its and the alternative driveline means the 40-ton truck helps the environment while it is on the road - it's CO2 free, quiet and generates almost no fine pollution. Comparing to diesel engine truck, the electric truck will save 11.8 tons CO2 annually.

The truck battery takes 3 to 4 hours to charge. The vehicle has the range of about 100 kilometres when fully charged.

"With this project we will gain valuable information on what will be possible with electric trucks in the future for city logistics," said Jürgen Maidl, head of logistics at BMW Group. "The BMW Group, along with our partner the SCHERM Group, is once again bravely embarking on a new journey and delivery pioneering work."

Superleggera Vision Concept 2018

The stunning Superleggera Vision Concept that was shown last year at the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance has been given light for production, a new report claims.

The Mini British based automaker has set the name for this two-seater convertible in collaboration with the famous design house Touring Superleggera from Milan Italy.

Production Mini Superleggera concept could use a plug-in hybrid powertrain similar to that of the i8 sports car. That arrangement will see a petrol engine mount at the front, with an electric motor mounted at the rear axle, along the same lines as BMW's all-wheel drive range-extender electric car powertrain. It will be based on the same UKL platform which already underpins the rest of the Mini range as well as the BMW 2 series Active Tourer.

The Superleggera will be positioned above the topless version of the Mini Hardtop as a more back to basics, driver focused model aimed right at the fourth-gen Mazda Miata and the upcoming Fiat 124 Spider. The superleggera is expected to make the transition from concept to production with only minor visual modifications. The futuristic headlights, the overly thin side mirrors and frameless windshield will be tossed out, but the long fin on the trunk lid and the UNion Jack-shaped tail lamps will suprisingly be retained.

BMW board member with the responsibility for Mini Peter Schwarzenbauer said that Mini was still exploring the potential of plug-in hybrid and EV tecnology. "Every new Mini model will come with a hybrid option; Plug-in hybrids are economically a little easier" he said "Full electric is extremely challenging. Finding small space to put all the batteries in is extremely challenging. We are working on both possibilities."

Schwarzenbauer said "There is no decision at the moment, but we have a lot of people here that are fighting hard for it. One of our superheroes will be an open car. I'm not saying the superleggera will come, but you will have an open car."

Audi R8 e-tron electric supercar

The R8 e-tron made its first appearance as "the e-tron concept" at the 2009 Frannkfurt auto show. The name, shape and colour of the R8 e-tron were inspired 1982 science fiction film Tron, by Steven Lisberger. In 2010, as side show to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, then Audi R&D chief Michael Dick drove a few laps on the course, barely finishing because of the charging state.

Audi has unveiled a new version of its R8 e-tron electric supercar concept at CES Asia.

A statement released by the company said "The R8 e-tron piloted driving technical study is equipped with all of the functions of piloted driving. Data is acquired from the interplay of an array of sensors: the new type of laser scanner, several video cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar sensors at the front and rear. Based on signals from these sources, the central driver assistance control unit (zFAS), a compact central computer, computes a comprehensive picture of the vehicle's environment."

Specifications:

The R8 e-tron 2.0 is fitted with a T-shaped lithium-ion battery shoe horned into the center tunnel and behind the passenger cell. It will be a rear-wheel drive vehicle and it can go a full 280 miles on an electric charge. The rear-mounted electric motors produce 456 horsepower and 679 lb-ft of torque, all funneled through a single-speed transmission. The sprint to 62 mph from just 3.9 seconds and top speed rated is 155 mph.

The first e-tron concept an all-wheel drive car with four motors was rated at 313 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque. It would have reached 62 mph in a 5.2 seconds it would have topped 125 mph. Its range was less than 150 miles.

BLUEBIRD DC50 Unbuild Electric Sport Car

The name Blue Bird was originally inspired by the play of that name by Maurice Maeterlinck and the vehicles were painted a shade of pale blue.

Malcolm Campbell had a succession of Darracq racing cars in the 1920s. In 1925, he also raced an Itala at Brooklands with the name 'The Blue Bird' painted on the bonnet.
The Hydroplane K4 began life as Malcolm's "Blue Bird", but when Donald decided to use her in 1949, after his father's death, he renamed her "Bluebird".

  • The Bluebird-Proteus CN7 was a technologically advanced wheel-driven land speed record-breaking car, driven by Donald Campbell, built in 1960 and rebuilt in 1962.
  • Bluebird Mach 1.1 (CMN-8) was a design for a rocket-powered supersonic land speed record car, planned by Donald Campbell but thwarted by his subsequent death during a water seed record attempt in Bluebird K in early 1967.

Bluebird DC50 electric sports car

The BluebirdDC50, a two door sports car with horse power ranging from 240 bhp to 360 bhp. The DC50 pays tribute to bluebird's past land and water speed record vehicles. The DC50's creator, Don Wales, grandson of Malcom Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell, has contested the electric powered land speed record.

Unfortunately, Bluebird DC50 electric sports car remains ghost to people which had launch in 2014 to mark 50 years since Donald Campbell's land and water speed runs.
"I wish, if I could get chance to rebuilt the Bluebird. "

Improved Lithium-Sulphur battery using Vitamin-C for electric vehicles

A group of Korean researchers led by Professor Lee Jae-Young at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology said that they succeeded in improving the energy capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries with Vitamin-C treated dual layered graphene-sulfur.

Lithium-Sulfur batteries are widely considered as a viable replacement for current lithium-ion batteries for electric cars because of its superior energy density. Yet, lithium sulfur batteries have not been actively used in the field since there are few problems to be resolved such as poor cycle performance and low charge/discharge rates.

The dual layered cathode is composed of a sulfur active layer and a poly-sulfide absorption layer
and both layers are based on Vitamin-C treated graphene oxide at various degrees of reduction.
However, the researchers showed that their Vitamin C treated dual layered cathode can increase sulfur utilization dramatically resulting in a lithium-sulfur battery with a high specific capacity of over 600 mAh/g after 100 cycles even under a high current rate of 1C.

The researchers state that this development can greatly improve low cycle performance of lithium-sulfur batteries, which is big obstacle to commercialization of them, and possibly open the door to using lithium-sulfur batteries in next-generation electric car batteries.

The results of development were published in the online version of ChemSusChem on April 29 with the title of "Improvement of energy capacity via Vitamin C-treated dual-layered graphene-sulfur cathodes in lithium sulfur battery".

NASA's Modular Robotic Vehicle Prototype

NEW MRV

Modular Robotic Vehicle is a battery powered electric vehicle developed at Johnson Space Center. NASA's new MRV Prototype is an advanced electric rover driven by even remote control. The MRV has four liquid-cooled wheel motors and separate wheel modules that can turn independently of each other. MRV has top speed of about 43 mph and a range of 62 miles of city driving on a single battery charge.

"Each e-corner can be controlled independently and rotated 180 degress about its axis. This allows for a suite of driving modes allowing MRV to maneuver unlike any traditional vehicle on the road. In addition to conventional front two wheel steering, the back wheels can also articulate allowing for turning radius as tight as zero. The driving mode can be switched so that all four wheels point and move in the same direction achieving an omni-directional, crab-like motion."
-(NASA)

"It's like driving on ice but having complete control. It's blast to ride and even more fun to drive."
-(Johnson Space Flight Center's) Justin Ridley

It also has a drive-by-wire system, which replaces mechanical links to the propulsion, steering and brake actuators with control inputs, which convert to electric signals and transmit via wires to the vehicle's motors.

"Just as NASA helped pioneer fly-by-wire technology in aircraft in the 1970s, MRV is an attempt to bring that technology  to the ground in modern automobiles."
-(NASA)

2017 Nissan Leaf

NISSAN LEAF

The Nissan Leaf is by far the highest volume electric car ever sold, with total sales now approaching 200,000 units.

It's expected the new Leaf will be a 2017 model year and it could be revealed by the Washington DC Auto Show January 2016, or the 2016 New York International Auto show in April, Baum ventured; and could be on sale by around October 2016.

Improvement of this model will relate to its outlook, but also on increased autonomy movement. The  new design direction, as a preliminary solution of the new Nissan Leaf is seen concept from Geneva. Although initially thought that the Nissan Sway concept, is introduction of the new generation Nissan Micra model, turned out differently. Sway concept had the task to display the new design language of future small car of company. Five door hatchback will better show in the form of a new generation Nissan Leaf, rather than the other one. The company stated that the 2017 Leaf certainly be a nice looking car. But it is possible to except a few surprises. The director of the design team is actually pointed out the possibilities of personalization of the new 2017 Nissan Leaf. Customers will be able to emphasize the car's electric nature and mitigate the conventional look.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERY (EVB) - ALFA BATTERY

AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERY OR TRACTION BATTERY

Rechargeable batteries are usually the most expensive components of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), being half the retail cost of the car.

Traction batteries must be designed with a high ampere-hour capacity. Batteries for electric vehicles are characterized by their relatively high power to weight ratio, energy to weight ratio and energy density; smaller, lighter batteries reduce the weight of the vehicle and improve its performance.

The predicted market for EBV is over $37 billion in 2020.

In 2015 we will see the Alfa battery (Aluminium air batteries) that has 40 times capacity of lithium-ion. The aluminium air battery has a theoretical specific energy level of 8,100 Wh/kg and the second largest capacity among various types of potential secondary batteries. The theoretical specific energy of a commercialized lithium ion battery is 120-200 Wh/kg.

According to its creators (Fuji Pigment Co. Ltd.) :

  • It can work just by refilling salty water or normal water once in a while.
  • Aluminium is an abundant, cheap and safe material which can be applied for metal air batteries. Therefore, battery price can be cheap.
  • The new battery can be manufactured and work in an ambient atmosphere because it is stable in ambient air conditions. Moreover, there is no need to worry about explosion or flammability like a lithium ion battery.
  • All materials (electrode, electrolyte) are safe and cheap, and can be made very easily even in the house kitchen.

ELECTRIC CAR ARRIVAL IN WORLD

ELECTRIC CAR

An electric car is an automobile that is propelled by one or more electric motors, using electrical energy stored in batteries or another energy storage device. Electric motors give electric cars instant torque, creating strong and smooth acceleration.

Thomas Parker, responsible for innovations such as electrifying the London Underground, overhead tramways in Liverpool and Birmingham, built the first practical production electric car in London in 1184, using his own specially designed high- capacity rechargeable batteries.
